A complicated photo, but one that I feel is important. Jackson is a complicated politician and former president - being a Union supporting constitutionalist, but also unrepentant slave owner. His statue and memorialization to this degree, in this public square is problematic without having a lot of historical context, and even then... Maybe it should not exist. As an artist and photographer, I try to see this more for the composition, which here I think is stunning with the moody clouds, and the way I was able to use the rule of thirds. I also love that it can be a single photo to kick off necessary conversations about our history, present, and future. Therefore, this image needs to exist.
